Directors Statement

Growing up, I was always fascinated by comic books and superheroes, especially the ones who looked like me. The larger-than-life persona and costumes inspired me in a way that felt like an awakening. This interest continued into adulthood. So, when I discovered the story of a little-known local legend, Willie J. Perry, also known as The Birmingham Batman, I knew I had to make a film about him. This short documentary follows his life through the eyes of his daughter, Marquetta Hill. I chose to tell the story in a grounded and intimate way, using music and a personal storytelling approach to bring out the emotional core of the film. At heart, it's a story about forgotten black history, exploring themes of selflessness and heroism. I have always been drawn to stories that are out of the ordinary. I often find myself emotionally invested in uncovering stories hidden in plain sight. As a first-time director, I approached this project with determination, learning to trust the creative process and to have confidence in my abilities. I hope that viewers will be inspired to explore their local history, taking the time to slow down and discover stories that have been largely overlooked.
